ScriptWriter Magazine is Britain’s first dedicated magazine for and about scriptwriting. It is for everyone who works with scripts – from writers and script editors to producers and broadcasters. ScriptWriter brings a critical focus to the debate on how we can produce better scripts and why most produced scripts do not lead to more successful films and television programmes. Is it the writing, producing or the result of government policies about the financing of the industry? Or is it perhaps something of each? ScriptWriter provides answers as well as asking questions. The magazine will be a talking point for all involved in the development of films and television drama, not only in the UK but throughout the EU and America. ScriptWriter’s primary purpose is the improvement of British scripts and the films and programmes upon which they are based. By creating an effective voice for scriptwriters, we believe writers will have a more influential role within the industries using their work. The magazine pulls no punches in its search for what is good and bad about the industry. Can the British Writers’ Guild grow the teeth of its counterpart across the pond? Are writers interested in having more power? Are writers ripped off as often as the lament is heard? Or is it producers who really have the hardest job, and writers who don’t understand their needs? Can scriptwriters be taught to write? Can producers and script editors be taught to read? The best teachers will look into the truth of the saying that those who can, teach; those who can’t, write. ScriptWriter is a magazine with attitude. It covers everything you might have been too scared to say about the people with whom you have worked. The magazine is setting out to provoke feature, drama and comedy writers – as well as the development industry – to challenge Big Brother, Survivor and other reality and greed shows, as well as the best that America has to offer. There are important issues affecting writers in film and television, but there is also the need for entertainment and fun. Dr Johnson described some writing as “…both good and original, but that part that was good was not original and the part that was original was not good.” ScriptWriter Magazine will make writers’ voices heard, and will also provide some fun in a very serious business.
