To create a commercially successful film, a writer needs to know about four elements: the creative, the artistic, the craft, and commerciality. What are the steps in the creative process and how do you make sure each step works for you? How do you get your creative process under your control, so the Muse is there when you need her? How do you work through writers block? How do you learn the best ways for you to work? SESSION TWO and THREE: Art and Craft. What is the relationship between art and creativity? What does it mean to have an artist’s voice, and how do you find your own? How do you nurture and expand on your artistic voice? What is the relationship between art and craft? What are the elements of craft that you need to learn in order to become a great screenwriter? How do you learn it without compromising your art? How to create great stories and great characters that are critically and commercially viable. What are the elements that are part of commercially successful films? Can you, as a writer, have a reasonable chance of writing a commercial script, or is it something that just happens? Are there ways you can tune in to the zeitgeist of the times, without compromising your creativity, art or craft? How to create films that do well internationally. Using clips from several films, we’ll look at how the artist’s voice is expressed, and how craft serves the art. SESSION FOUR: The Art of Adaptation.
